History

The origins of the Lincombe Barn.

From a study of the structure, an architect came to the conclusion that it was built around 1750.

For most of its life it was part of the Cleve Hill Estate. In 1920 Sir Charles Daniel Cave decided to auction off the estate and the barn formed one of the lots.

It had a succession of owners until Mangotsfield Urban District Council bought it in 1968. It was their intension to demolish it as part of a road widening scheme for Overndale Road.

A dedicated group of local residents fought against this and it was spared and became the home of the Downend Folk House Association.

As the photograph shows, it was in a very dilapidated condition. The original steering committee and other volunteers embarked on the huge task of renovating the site.
